Literary Hour at John C. Campbell Folk School

The North Carolina Writers’ Network-West’s Literary Hour will be held at the John C. Campbell Folk School on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at 7 p.m. The event will be held in the Open House. The Literary Hour is free and open to the public.

The featured writers for October are Richard Cary and CarolLynn Jones.

Richard Montfort Cary, the featured poet for October, began writing poetry in high school and continues to this day. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 1964 with a BFA in Theatre Arts. He spent six years in regional theaters before moving year-round to Nantucket Island in Massachusetts where he worked as a designer and builder of custom homes. In 1985, he founded Actors Theatre of Nantucket, the island’s professional theater company. He served as the artistic director for twenty years. Richard and his wife Cheryl moved to Hayesville, North Carolina, in 2017. He has roots in the area as his great-aunt, Olive Dame Campbell, founded the John C Campbell Folk School. Richard will read several of his poems.

CarolLynn Jones received a scholarship to study art and illustration at Syracuse University. Subsequently, she started a greeting card business and sold cards to stores throughout the country. Her historical novel, Danya, written under the pen name of C.S. Jones, was inspired by her travels in Russia, which included living with a Russian family for two weeks. The novel, based on the memoirs of those who struggled to survive the Russian communist revolution, follows the lives of two families in a world going mad with sweeping cultural, religious, and political upheaval. She will be reading an excerpt from Danya as well as a true story of hope and redemption.

The Literary Hour will be held on the third Thursday of the month through November at John C. Campbell Folk School in the roofed and open pavilion of the Open House. 

From Clays Corner in Brasstown turn onto Brasstown Road, then turn left on Scoggins Road then left again to pass Davidson Hall. Or coming from Martins Creek, turn right onto Davidson Road and follow around to Open House. Parking is in front near the vegetable gardens.

This interactive workshop will help you bring your characters to life with dialogue that is authentic, clear, and compelling.  Capture the flavor of personality, place, and culture through speech that sounds real.  In-class exercises will cover word choice, tone, action beats, what to leave out, and format.

April 23 - Catherine Carter

Description:

Bracket and Hinge: Strengthening Poems’ Sonic Level. In this 2-hour lecture/workshop, Catherine Carter will use contemporary poems to discuss a few of the ways in which a poem can be built around the sounds of single words, model one possible process for revising a poem in this way, and encourage participants to do this with their own works. Participants should bring hard copy of one or two of their own short poems to work on.

June 25 - Patricia Zick

Patricia Zick's workshop, "The Road to Publishing" will explore the different choices for publishing a book. Then she will delve into the step-by-step process for self-publishing a work of nonfiction or fiction using Amazon’s publishing platform. Ms. Zick, the author of twenty-five published books in a variety of genres, will demonstrate how to prepare a manuscript, provide definitions for publishing jargon, and walk through the process for uploading a book for both Kindle and paperback publication to the online retail site.

The Road to Publishing

A Workshop presented by Patricia Zick

Author and editor, Patricia Zick, will present a workshop on Saturday, September 28, 10:15 - 1:15 at the Mountain Regional Library in Young Harris, GA, located on Miller Street, but is seen from hwy 515 in Young Harris.

The workshop will explore the different choices for publishing a book, but the main focus will show the steps involved in self-publishing a work of nonfiction or fiction using Amazon’s publishing platform. Patricia, the author of twenty-five published books in a variety of genres, will demonstrate how to prepare a manuscript, define publishing concepts, and walk through the step-by-step process for uploading a book for both Kindle and paperback publication to the online retail site.

Her writing career began in 1998 with the publication of her first novel by a small publisher. She went with a traditional press for her next two novels, and worked with an agent for several years. 

However, when the Independent (Indie) publishing movement began gaining momentum in 2010, she was ready to try something different where she had more control over the process, the work itself, and the payments for that work. Patricia has also worked as a reporter, editor, and publisher of a small newspaper in north Florida. The skills learned in those jobs helped with her venture into the world of an Indie author.

She is also a freelance editor who has helped more than a dozen writers go from a rough draft manuscript to a final published author via Amazon.

The three-hour workshop will showcase what it takes to publish independently. It may not be the road for everyone, but at the end of this class, attendees will have a good idea of what route will work for them.

Attendees may bring a sandwich or snack and a drink. No kitchen facilities available, but we will take a short break around noon.

Patricia lives in Cherokee County with her husband, Robert, during the spring and summer. They spend the cooler months in Tallahassee, Florida. In both of their homes, they share a love of the outdoors. They kayak, hike, garden, and play golf. While her husband tends the garden, she can be found at her laptop pounding out her next novel or preparing manuscripts for publication.

Published as P.C. Zick, she’s in the process of completing a seven-book series of sweet contemporary romances set in Chicago. Her Smoky Mountain Romances, set in Cherokee County, chronicle the stories of a small community of people who come together as family drawn together by love. She also edits books for others in her spare time.
