The vote is in and most of our readers escape into fiction/novels when they want to relax and get away from it all. Second place went to non-fiction, and magazines, poetry and romance tied for third place.

Writers and poets in the far western mountain area of North Carolina and bordering counties of South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee post announcements, original work and articles on the craft of writing.
Just finished reading "Surreal South" Anthology. Many great stories and poems in there with "dark" or surreal southern themes.
ReplyDeleteJim, Thanks for your comment. I want to read that anthology. It sounds interesting.

ReplyDeleteIt will come as no surprise that I am reading now about the fourth book written by Jon Katz about his dogs, Orson, Rose, border collies and his Labrador Clem he calls the whore of Bedlam Farms (she earns the title) He lives on a farm in upper New York State with about 20 sheep for his B.C.'s to herd, Carol, a donkey and Winston, a rooster and his harem. I recommend : A Dog Year, Dogs of Bedlam Farm, Dispatches from Bedlam Farm, and now Good Dog, the story of the author's deep love of the dog, Orson, who has something broken from his past.
I bought 4 books from Amazon for less than $20.00 including postage. I can't wait to read "From Baghdad with Love" about a puppy abandoned and found by a soldier in a building vacated.

I am currently reading "The Invisable Man" by Ralph Ellison. If I want to get blown away, I read J.R.R. Tolkien.

Robert B.Parker (for his incredible economy), Elizabeth George (for her characters), Wallace Stegner for his all-around artistry and humanity. Too many others to name!
ReplyDeleteI ran across a wonderful book that makes me laugh and I need that these days. This is probably the last book written by Irma Bombeck before cancer took her life. I found A Marriage Made in Heaven or Too Tired for an Affair at an antiques market. With her special brand of humor, she described my life of wedded bliss to the same man for 44 years.
ReplyDeleteSeems as life gets more tedious as we get older, we need more things to lighten our days. Irma aways made me laugh in her columns and the couple of chapters I've read in this book had me laughing out loud. It was like reading my own memoir.
Well, if we are talking about the man who may be our greatest living writer, it is Cormac McCarthy. However, the writer that captures Appalachia's sounds (speech), beauty and terror, it is William Gay. Then, there is Ron Rash's new novel, Serena that is destined to make Ron one of Appalachia's greatest writers.
