Breath and Shadow Winter Issue is up.

A few years ago I discovered a journal specifically for people with disabilities. I mean the writers of the articles have some disability. Disabilities run the gamut of health problems. I found I qualified to write for this publication because I have fibromyalgia, a physically limiting issue. I was honored they accepted my work.

I know of other writers who have contributed and the work in this journal is excellent. You can read more about it on Twitter, Facebook or  here  To learn about resources for people with disabilities, scroll down the blog and find articles that are helpful.

issue is up and ready for reading. We present poems by Emma Gorka,
Rick Blum, Sergio Ortiz, and Ken Allen Dronsfield. There are
non-fiction pieces by J. Astrian Horsburgh and Barlow Adams. We also
have an article about disabled fashion models by Denise Noe. We have
short fiction by Scott MacAulay,Lyn G. Farrell, and Tara Calaby.
Finally, more must-read works in our ‘New On The Bookshelf’ section.

NCWN-West's Program Coordinator, Glenda Council Beall to teach writing classes this spring at Tri-County Community College and Young Harris College's Institute for Continuing Learning

Glenda Council Beall will teach writing classes this spring at two colleges.

Beall will teach on Monday evenings beginning in March 2018, from 5:30 – 8:00 PM, at Tri-County Community College in Murphy, NC. Her topic is Creative Writing. Beall writes: Perhaps you want to write about yourself or people you know, places you have been or family history. Perhaps you have always had stories wandering around in your brain and you want to write fiction. Poetry? Prose? Not sure? Your questions will be answered to help you discover your writing niche. Sidney Lanier Poetry Competition open to submissions

Sidney Lanier Poetry Competition

The Lanier Library is proud to present the 10th Annual Sidney Lanier Poetry Competition!

Eligibility and Guidelines

The competition is open to all, including previous contestants, except for members of the Lanier Library Staff, its Board of Directors, or competition judges.
Previously published poems are not eligible for the competition.
There are two categories for entries: Adults (18 and above) and Students (13-18)
Poems are to be typed in 12-point font (single spaced) and may not exceed 40 lines. The preferred method of submission is electronic. Electronic submissions are only accepted via Submittable (Adult Submittables and Student Submittables). If submitting by mail or in person, please include the Poetry Competition Application for either Adult or Student plus two copies of each poem with the poet’s name on only one copy.

There is an entry fee of $15 per poem ($5 per poem for student entries). Multiple submissions are acceptable; competitors may submit up to 5 poems, accompanied by a $15/$5 fee per poem.

Rules for Submission

  1. The contest is open to all poets who currently reside in and have had residency in one of the following states for a minimum of 12 consecutive months: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia. (Residency will be verified before prize winner is announced.)

  2. Writers who have published 2 or more full-length collections of poetry or who do not meet the residency requirements are NOT eligible

  3. Translations and manuscripts in languages other than English are not acceptable, however manuscripts that occasionally use words from other languages are perfectly fine

  4. All poems submitted will become the property of White Oak Kitchen & Cocktails and can be published without further approval of author

  5. Manuscripts must be received prior to February 4, 2018

  6. The submitted poems will not be returned

  7. No entry fee required

  8. Poem Guidelines:

        - Only one submission per author

        - 40-line limit

        - Must be on the topic of “FAITH”

        - Poem must be typed (single-spaced)

        - Author must include name, address, phone number, email address, word count and manuscript title on the submitted poem

  9. Poems must be submitted by email to info@whiteoakkitchen.com

  10. No revisions of submitted manuscripts will be allowed during the contest

  11. The winner will be announced on February 12, 2018 and contacted to discuss delivery of the $1,500 payment prize
